Lord Mahaveer's Life History in Brief

Lord Mahaveer was the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankara of the Jain religion. He was born in 599 B.C. in Bihar, India on the 13th day of the bright fortnight in the month of Chaitra i.e. Chaitra Sudi Teras.

King Siddharth and queen Trishala's son, the prince was given the name of Vardhaman at birth.At the age of thirty, he left his family and royal household to become a monk. The Lord practised severe austerities and deep meditation for the subsequent twelve years. He then reached the village Jrambhika and stayed on the banks of the river Rijuvaluka where he attained Keval Gyan / Omniscience on the Tenth day of the bright half of the month of Vaisakh i.e. Vaisakh Sudi Dasam.

Mahaveerswami spent the next 30 years preaching the path to eternal freedom or Moksha. At the age of 72, Lord Mahaveer attained Nirvana and his purified soul left his body.


Five Kartavyas (Necessary Deeds) for a Shravak (Laity) during Paryushan

   1. Amari Pravartan - Total Non-Violence
    Special Attention to Jeev Daya is to be paid during these days. One should undertake fasting as per personal capacity and take care not to hurt even the minutest organisms, even those which cannot be seen by naked eyes.

   2. Sadharmik Vatsalya - Love towards co-follower of Jain religion
    This means you should take care of co-followers of Jain Religion. It can be done in two ways

  3. Dravya Bhakti: Honouring co-follower by gifts etc.
        Bhaav Bhakti: Helping co-followers to be stable and then firm in their religious beliefs and lending a helping hand whenever required.

   4. Shamapana - Asking for Forgiveness
    If you have hurt someone or have any ill-feelings, you should ask for heartfelt forgiveness from that person. Do not leave any trace of anger or enemity towards anyone in the heart.

   5. Atham Tap - Fasting for 3 days
    Since times immemorial the eating habit has been formed which needs to be controlled. The craving for tastes that the tongue looks for has to be broken. Our body needs to be prepared & purified for a stage where it does not require any food and finally this helps in shredding of the bad karma collected in the past.

   6. Chaitya Pari Paathi - Visiting local Jain Temples
    It should be done in a manner and clothing befitting royalty in a procession. In the temples you visit, you should leave materials used in puja, dhoop (incense sticks), sandalwood, silver pages (aangi material). This will help you in softening yourself and help you in moving ahead in religion. It will help you in understanding the wrote truth (achieve samkit).
